Want to use your own domain for email tracking but aren't sure how to configure the DNS settings?
Setting up a custom tracking domain is simpler than it sounds. You just need to choose an unused subdomain, add the CNAME record provided by your email platform, verify the configuration, and activate HTTPS.
Once configured, your campaign links can use your branded tracking hostname instead of a shared one.
In this guide, you'll learn:
- What a custom tracking domain is and how it works.
- How to configure DNS and CNAME records.
- How to verify and troubleshoot your setup.
- How to activate tracking in Oppora.
What Is a Custom Tracking Domain and How Does It Work?
A custom tracking domain is a branded hostname you control that your email platform uses to track campaign clicks and, where supported, email opens.
Instead of relying on a shared tracking address, you can use a subdomain like track.example.com while your email platform handles tracking behind the scenes.
Follow a Tracked Link From Click to Destination
When someone clicks a tracked link, the process works like this:
- Click: Your recipient opens https://track.example.com/
- Tracking: The service records the click event.
- Redirect: The visitor reaches your intended landing page.
Your CNAME record connects the branded hostname to the tracking service. The service handles event recording and redirects.
Understand Branded Links and Shared-Domain Risks
Branded links make your domain recognizable and give you control over the hostname.
Shared tracking domains depend on infrastructure used by multiple customers, potentially exposing you to shared reputation risks.
However, branding alone cannot guarantee reputation isolation or better deliverability. You still need SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and responsible sending practices.

Tracking provides engagement signals, but those signals have limitations.
Apple's Mail Privacy Protection prevents reliable open measurement for protected messages, regardless of your tracking hostname.
Meanwhile, Google recommends keeping Postmaster Tools spam rates below 0.1% and avoiding 0.3% or higher.
These are sender-health thresholds, not benefits created by custom tracking domains.
What Do You Need Before Changing DNS?
Before setting up a custom tracking domain, you need domain-management permission, access to your authoritative DNS settings, and an email platform supporting branded tracking.
Remember, your domain registrar, website host, and DNS provider might be different companies. Make sure you're editing records in the right place.
Confirm Access to the Authoritative DNS Provider
Start by checking your domain's nameservers using an online DNS lookup tool or this command:
nslookup -type=NS example.com
The results help identify where your active DNS records are managed.
As Google Cloud's DNS documentation explains, authoritative nameservers store the original DNS records.
Before making changes, confirm editing permissions and save a copy of your existing records.
Choose an Unused Tracking Subdomain
Next, select a dedicated hostname like track.example.com.
Here, track is the subdomain label, while track.example.com is the complete tracking hostname.
Check your DNS records to ensure the hostname isn't already assigned to another service.
According to Cloudflare's DNS documentation, CNAME records cannot coexist with conflicting A, AAAA, or CNAME records at the same hostname.
Get the Required Values From Your Email Platform
Finally, open your platform's tracking-domain settings and collect:
- Host/Name: Your chosen subdomain.
- Target/Value: The platform-provided destination hostname.
- Proxy settings: The required DNS proxy configuration.
Always copy your account-specific values because tracking targets can differ between platforms and accounts.

What Is a DMARC Record and How Does It Work? How to Configure a Custom Tracking Domain With DNS and CNAME
To configure your custom tracking domain, create a CNAME record connecting track.example.com to your email platform.
Follow these four steps to establish the DNS connection. Platform activation and campaign testing come afterward.
Step 1 — Open Your DNS Record Editor
First, sign in to your authoritative DNS provider, such as Cloudflare, GoDaddy, or Namecheap, using your domain management credentials.
Select the correct domain, navigate to DNS Management or DNS Settings, and click Add Record to create a new entry.
Keep your existing website, email, and other DNS records unchanged..
Step 2 — Enter the CNAME Host and Target
Enter the values supplied by your email platform.
Some DNS providers automatically append .example.com to track.
Enter the Target as a hostname without https://, paths, or tracking tokens.
Step 3 — Apply the Required Proxy Setting and Save
Follow your email platform’s proxy requirements carefully. If you're using Oppora, select DNS only instead of Proxied to ensure proper tracking-domain verification.
As explained in Cloudflare’s documentation, proxy settings determine how traffic reaches your server.
Before saving, check for conflicting DNS records at your chosen tracking hostname to avoid configuration errors.
Step 4 — Confirm That the CNAME Resolves
To verify your CNAME record, open your terminal and run:
nslookup -type=CNAME track.example.com
Compare the returned hostname with the Target provided by your email platform.
According to Microsoft's nslookup documentation, this command helps identify DNS aliases.
A matching result confirms CNAME resolution, but doesn't guarantee SSL activation, working redirects, or accurate campaign tracking.
How to Test and Troubleshoot Your Custom Tracking Domain
After configuring your CNAME, verify three things: correct DNS resolution, working HTTPS, and successful campaign-link redirects.
Simply opening track.example.com isn't enough to confirm that tracking works.
Send a Test Campaign to Inboxes You Control
Send a test email to your Gmail or Outlook inbox and follow these steps:
- Inspect the link: Confirm it uses your branded tracking hostname.
- Test the redirect: Click the link and check that the destination loads without SSL certificate warnings.
- Verify tracking: Check whether your platform records the click.
- Test unsubscribe: Use a test contact to confirm the unsubscribe link works.
These checks confirm functionality, not inbox placement.

Oppora recommends allowing 24–48 hours for DNS propagation when troubleshooting.
However, you don't need to wait if verification succeeds.
Review Tracking Events Alongside Replies
Recorded clicks don't always reflect genuine prospect interest, as automated security systems may inspect email links.
According to Microsoft's Safe Links documentation, security tools scan URLs to detect potential threats.
Therefore, evaluate campaign performance by comparing tracking events with positive replies, qualified conversations, and actual prospect engagement.

Set Up and Activate Your Custom Tracking Domain in Oppora
Once your DNS settings are ready, you can activate your branded tracking domain directly in Oppora.
Before starting, connect a mailbox using a domain you own. Free Gmail or Outlook addresses aren't supported for custom tracking domains.
Open Email Accounts and Select Tracking Domain
To begin, follow these steps:
- Open Email accounts from the Oppora dashboard.
- Find your connected mailbox and click the ⋮ menu.
- Select Tracking domain. Alternatively, use the setup banner above your email accounts.
- Choose an unused subdomain like track and click Set up.
Oppora will display the DNS configuration required for your tracking hostname.
Compare Your DNS Record With Oppora's Account Values
Now, open your DNS provider and compare the existing record with Oppora's instructions.
The official Oppora setup guide provides this example:
Your account's Target may differ, so always follow the values shown in your dashboard.
Click Verify Now and Confirm Active Status
After saving your DNS record, return to Oppora and click Verify Now.
Oppora checks your configuration and automatically provisions an SSL certificate.
You'll see the status change from Issuing certificate to Active once HTTPS activation finishes.
New campaign emails then use your branded tracking hostname. Previously sent links remain unchanged.
Confirm Which Mailboxes and Links Are Covered
Once activated, Oppora applies your tracking domain across mailboxes sharing the same sending domain, including follow-up emails.
It covers:
- Open tracking: Supported tracking pixels.
- Click tracking: Campaign links when enabled.
- Unsubscribe links: Email and one-click unsubscribe links.
SSL is configured automatically, but open and click tracking depend on your enabled campaign settings.
For mailboxes using another sending domain, configure a separate tracking hostname.
Conclusion
Setting up a custom tracking domain helps you use branded links while keeping campaign tracking under your control.
The process is straightforward: choose an unused subdomain, add the correct CNAME record, verify DNS resolution, activate HTTPS, and test a campaign link before launching.
Remember, a working tracking domain doesn't automatically improve deliverability. You still need proper email authentication, healthy sending practices, and regular monitoring.
If you're using Oppora, you can manage this setup directly from Email accounts → Tracking domain. Complete verification, confirm the status shows Active, and test your campaign links to ensure everything works as expected.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I use the same tracking subdomain with two email platforms?
A tracking hostname generally points to one platform’s service through its CNAME record. For two platforms, create separate subdomains, such as track.example.com and links.example.com. Configure each with its respective provider’s required values. This avoids conflicting DNS records and lets you manage verification, certificates, and troubleshooting independently for each email platform.
Will a custom tracking domain change my sender email address?
No. Your sender address and tracking hostname serve different purposes. An email can come from [email protected] while its tracked links use track.example.com. Configuring that hostname does not rename your mailbox or change your reply address. Sender authentication and tracking configuration remain separate tasks, even when both use the same domain.
Do I need to purchase a separate domain for tracking?
Usually, no. If you already control a domain, you can typically create a tracking subdomain within its existing DNS settings without purchasing another domain. Your email platform or DNS provider may charge for related services, so check their terms. A separate domain is an optional choice, rather than a requirement.
Will adding a tracking CNAME change the links displayed on my website?
Adding the DNS record alone does not rewrite links on your website. Your email platform applies the tracking hostname when generating supported campaign links. Existing website links remain as configured unless you edit them separately. Check the platform’s tracking settings to understand which outgoing email links it rewrites when sending.
Should I add my tracking subdomain to Google Search Console?
Search Console verification is not normally required to activate email tracking. The hostname serves tracking requests and redirects rather than functioning as a content website. Focus on your email platform’s verification process. If you investigate indexing or security issues later, Search Console may provide additional visibility where verification is supported.
